All Saints Cathedral School continued its winning ways in academics this weekend at the annual Science Bowl competition, securing the championship for a third time. But it was Charlotte Amalie High School that surprised observers as it stormed undefeated into the final round.
The St. Thomas parochial school recovered from an early loss to St. Croix Country Day School in the regional round-robin tournament held at the Educational Complex on St. Croix. The defending champions recovered to defeat Sts. Peter and Paul, Antilles and Country Day before going up against CAHS for the championship on Saturday.
To secure the right to represent the territory in May at the Energy Department's National Science Bowl at Washington, D.C., All Saints won five straight rounds after the Country Day loss.
CAHS defeated Sts. Peter and Paul, Antilles and Country Day.
In Round 1 on Friday, Educational Complex lost to All Saints, St. Joseph's lost to Country Day, Central High lost to Antilles, and Sts. Peter and Paul lost to CAHS. Charlotte Amalie and All Saints each had just one loss going into the deciding playoff game.
All Saints received a computer donated by the Water And Power Authority, a Science Bowl sponsors. Each member of the CAHS and All Saints teams received a graphing calculator. The Sportsmanship Award, voted on by tournament officials, went to Central High School.
