Dec. 31, 2001 – Harbour Night will provide a festive welcome to the New Year in Frederiksted Wednesday from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.
The event will see the return home of Image Band, a St. Croix group now based in Washington, D.C., plus the appearance of The Noels, Junie and the Jungle, Willard John's Moko Jumbies and the Karamu AFI Dance and Drum Troupe.
Organizer Hugh Dalton said the first Harbour Night of 2002 should attract lots of locals as well as visitors, since it coincides with the Crucian Christmas Festival, and the festival Village is right down the street.
He expects more than 50 vendors to set up shop for Harbour Night Wednesday evening, including such not-for-profit groups as the American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, St. Croix Animal Shelter, and V.I. Chess Federation.
"There will be food, crafts and T-shirts," Dalton said. Also, he said, there will be improved security in the form of an increased police presence and more lights on Strand Street.
No parking will be allowed on Strand Street from 5 p.m. to midnight Wednesday. Cars parked there after 5 p.m. will be towed at the owner's expense.
Throughout 2002, Harbour Nights are planned for every other Wednesday, when the Carnival Cruise Lines ship Victory is scheduled to be in port.
