June 18, 2002 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull will announce who his running mate will be in November at 10 a.m. on Tuesday from Gertrude's Restaurant on St. Croix.
Not to anyone's surprise, it won't be Lt. Gov. Gerard "Luz" James II, who recently announced his own candidacy for governor.
The Turnbull–James split became public two years ago when James, in a snit, refused to attend the ball held to rededicate Government House on St. Croix, saying he had been slighted by being given only 15 tickets for the event.
It is widely speculated that St. Croix Sen. Vargrave Richards will be running with Turnbull for the lieutenant governor's position.
Calls were made Monday from the Turnbull camp inviting the press to attend on Tuesday and later in the day a release was sent.
Turnbull will be one of the few candidates to have officially announced his running mate. Only John de Jongh has made his choice known to date; he is actively campaigning with Paul Arnold as his running mate.
Cora Christian, one of the first to announce her run for Government House, has yet to name a lieutenant governor, nor has Republican Michael Bornn named anyone.
It is now assumed in most political quarters that former Sen. Stephanie Scott-Williams will run with Olaf "Bronco" Hendricks of St. Croix, who has yet to officially announce his candidacy. In fact it was speculated a few months ago that Hendricks might run with Turnbull.
Political pundits are, so far, predicting the race will end up between Turnbull and de Jongh. It was de Jongh, who served as Finance commissioner during the Farrelly administration, that Turnbull enlisted to spearhead the task force to develop the current administration's five-year plan.
