June 17, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today includes these announcements:
Welcome to Visiting High School Students
The UVI community welcomes high school students from throughout the Virgin Islands who are beginning summer programs on the St. Thomas Campus June 17. Fifty-five students are enrolled in the Upward Bound summer residential program. Another 50 students are participating in the Summer Science Enrichment program.
The St. Croix campus joins in the summer activities next Monday, June 27, when twenty VI students in grades seven and eight begin a five-week Junior Science Enrichment program.
VI Teachers Begin Writing Project Institute
Along with high school students, the St. Thomas campus is hosting 22 teachers from local schools for the territory's first Writing Project Summer Institute. The institute opened June 17, and continues through July 18, with daylong sessions Mondays through Thursdays. The institute will concentrate on the teaching of writing, and will give teachers the opportunity to develop their own writing skills. The V.I. Writing Project is part of the National Writing Project, which includes similar efforts at 174 sites in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Paiewonsky Library Seeks To Complete Division Newsletter Archives
UVI's Paiewonsky Library, on the St. Thomas campus, is seeking copies of back issues of divisional newsletters to fill out its collection. While some issues of the various divisions' newsletters are on file at the library, the library's goal is to archive complete sets of newsletters for all university divisions and departments.
Please drop off or send spare copies of any division newsletter to the attention of Lybia Callwood. For more information call her at 693-1364.
'For Better, For Worse' Continues
David Edgecombe's comedy "For Better, For Worse," resumes performances Friday, June 21, through Monday, June 24. Showtime is 8 p.m. in the UVI Little Theatre. Tickets are $15, and are available on campus at the Reichhold Box Office (693-1559) and the UVI Bookstore, on St. Thomas at Krystal Gifts Galore, Modern Music and Parrot Fish, and on St. John at Connections.
IDC/EDC Benefits for Small Businesses
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) continues its series of informational seminars on Wednesday, June 27, with a presentation titled "IDC/EDC Benefits and Small Businesses." The free seminar is presented in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the VI Economic Development Authority.
Registration begins at 6 p.m. and the two-hour session starts at 6:30 p.m. It takes place in the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. To pre-register or for details call 776-3206.
Pasture Walk Offered by Agricultural Experiment Station
Dr. Elide Valencia, research assistant professor of agronomy at UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station, will host an evening pasture walk on Tuesday, June 18. The walk will showcase pasture establishment and management, ecological and economic impact on small ruminant production, and the opportunities for marketing goats in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Interested participants will meet at the east end entrance of the Research and Extension Center, on the St. Croix campus, at 4:30 p.m. and proceed to the James Hamilton livestock farm. St. Thomas Campus Cafeteria Open
The St. Thomas campus cafeteria reopened today, Monday, June 17.
Hours of operation are:
Monday through Friday: 7-9 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.; and 4:30-7 p.m.
Saturday: 8-9 a.m.; Noon-1 p.m.; 5-6 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; 5-6 p.m.
