CARNIVAL ART SHOW FEATURES ST. JOHN ARTISTS

0

April 10, 2003 – A number of St. John artists are represented in "Carnival! The Art Show," which opens Friday at Alexander's Café on St. Thomas. The timing couldn't be better: It's the kickoff of the weekend that will see the first two 2003 V.I. Carnival events — the queen show on Saturday and the rain-delayed prince and princess show on Sunday.
The exhibition showcases a veritable visual floupe of carnival sights and scenes interpreted by 15 artists whose mediums span painting, silkscreen, batik and photography.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. that also will feature complimentary champagne and appetizers and a chance to win a gift from one of the exhibitors.
"Carnival imagery is as broad and diverse as Carnival itself," show organizer Claire Ocha says. Among the works that will hang at Alexander's through May 8 are "Carnival Colors" by photographer Steve Simonsen, "Butterfly" by oil painter Karen Samuel and "Carnival Lady" by watercolorist Anita de la Cruz.
Also represented in the exhibition are Cammie Clark, Anita de la Cruz, Elaine Estern, M. Lisa Etre, David Hill, Edie Paljavcsik Johnson, Eric Johnson, Judith King, Sean McCoy, Shamal Phipps, Denice C. Smith, Eunice Summer and Doreen Walsh.
Alexander's Café features a new artist or group or artists every month with an opening reception. To sample the show offerings, visit the St. John Gallery Web site.
All of the artwork is for sale. Dinner will be available at Alexander's Café following the reception. For reservations, call 774-4349.
