April 10, 2003 — The 21st annual National Library Week Run to Your Library road race begins and finishes, appropriately, in front of the Florence Williams Public Library at 49-50 King Street in Christiansted. The 5K (3.1 mile) race starts at 6 a.m. Saturday, April 12, and takes runners through the streets of historic Christiansted.
The race is open to all regardless of fitness level, said a release.
Awards will be presented to top finishers in various categories.
George Jules and Earthla Arthur won the 2002 Run to Your Library race in 18 minutes 14 seconds and 21:47 respectively. Several runners reportedly use this race as a warm-up for the Carnival Mile in St. Thomas.
As part of the event, V.I. Olympic Committee officials will be on hand for a news conference about an Olympic Academy for the Virgin Islands. Head Librarian Wallace Williams, who directs the Run to Your Library and other V.I. Pace Runners races, is assisting the committee in the development of the academy project.
On display at the library is a collage representing the Athens Olympics prepared by Jay Wilshire, a V.I. participant in a seminar for young participants at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece.
