April 10, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
CTO Secretary General to Lecture on St. Thomas, St. Croix Campuses
UVI's social sciences division presents its Distinguished Lecture Series featuring Jean S. Holder, secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) on April 10 and 11. Holder will speak on the topic "The State of Tourism in the Caribbean after 9-11." Holder has worked in tourism in the Caribbean for more than 25 years.
Holder's lecture is open to all members of the community, but Dr. Dion Phillips, chairman of the division on the St. Thomas campus, hopes that those directly involved in tourism will take a keen interest in the lecture. "None of us are exempt from the rippling effects of terrorism," Dr. Phillips said.
Holder's presentation will be held at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, April 10), in Room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
The St. Croix lecture will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, in the theater of the Melvin Evans Center (Room 401). For more information call Mary Dickinson at 693-1260.
UVI On-Line Registration Extended through Saturday, April 12
The period of online, web-based registration for continuing, matriculated UVI students has been extended until 11 p.m., Saturday, April 12. This extended period applies only to online registration. Manual registration closed at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9.
Online registration is available to any continuing, matriculated students who have access to the Internet at home or on campus. Students must meet with advisers to obtain PIN numbers before registering online. The online registration page is available through the UVI web page or at this direct link.
Questions regarding online registration should be directed the Office of the Registrar at 693-1160 or 693-1161 on St. Thomas or the academic services office at 692-4158 on St. Croix.
Class schedules for both the fall and summer sessions and an academic calendar are available via the Academics section of the UVI Web page.
Final Weekend of 'Merchant of Venice' Begins Friday
Theater lovers have one more weekend to catch the spring production of "The Merchant of Venice" at the UVI Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. More than 200 people turned out for the open weekend of the play which is being produced by the UVI speech communications and theatre department.
The play continues with 8 p.m. performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 11 through 13. Tickets, which cost $5 students and $10 for adults, are available at the UVI Bookstore and the Humanities Building on the St. Thomas campus, Nisky Pharmacy, Parrotfish on Back Street, and Dockside Bookstore in Havensight Mall. UVI's Lady Buccaneers Featured Online
A photo series of UVI's Lady Buccaneers, 2003 champions of the ODI basketball league, is now available on the UVI web site. Find it in the Current Events section of the UVI web page (link at end of this article).
UVI's Lady Buccaneers captured their first Inter-University Sports Organization (ODI) basketball championship Thursday, April 3, defeating the University of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan 62-52 in overtime. UVI's men's team captured third place in their division of the tournament on Monday, April 7, defeating Politecnica University, 86-70.
St. Thomas-St. Kitts and Nevis Students Plan Cultural Showcase
UVI's St. Thomas-St. Kitts and Nevis Student Organization will host a "Cultural Showcase" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 11, on the porch of the St. Thomas campus cafeteria. The UVI community is invited to come out and explore the cultural richness of UVI students.
"Showtime at UVIO" – Scheduled Friday on St. Thomas
St. Thomas campus students will present "Showtime at UVIO," (their version of "Showtime at the Apollo") at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the cafeteria. Tickets — $3 for students and $5 for non-students — are available at the student activities office.
Golden Key Honor Society Plans St. Thomas Induction April 13
The Golden Key Honor Society will hold its ninth annual induction ceremony for new members at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. For details call 693-1111.
St. Croix Health Workshop Featured in National Publication
UVI's St. Croix campus has been prominently featured in the winter 2002 issue of the NAFEO (National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education) Health News. The publication covered the weeklong, NAFEO health workshop organized by UVI Nurse Justa TitaThompson and the UVI Student Affairs Office. The publication included front-page photo coverage. Graphics material from the UVI sessions was also included in a pamphlet developed to highlight the Peer Education and Prevention Project: Getting the HIV/AIDS message out.
Seminar to Focus on Developments in V.I. Fish Farming Systems
UVI's Water Resources Research Institute and the Agricultural Experiment Station invites the public to a seminar entitled "Commercial Fish Farming Systems for the Virgin Islands: Recent Research Developments at UVI" at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, on St. Croix in the Research and Extension Center Room 133 and again on St. Thomas at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in the Sports and Fitness Center Training Room. Dr. James Rakocy, AES Director and Research Professor of Aquaculture, will be the presenter. For more information call 693-1069.
Computer Literacy Exams Scheduled April 22
The computer literacy Exams (CLE) will be offered on the St. Thomas campus Tuesday, April 22. Exams will be administered in rooms 101 or 103 of the CA Building on St. Thomas. Sign-up sheets for those interested are available in the Registrar's Office from noon to 2 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
Future of V.I. Agriculture to be Topic of April 22-23 Forum on St. Croix
The future of agriculture in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be the topic of a forum for farmers scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 22 and 23 in the theatre of the Melvin Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. The forum theme is "Prospects for Sustainable Agriculture in the Virgin Islands." It will address issues of agricultural policy, training, funding, marketing and production. Registration costs $20 and covers materials and lunches.
All farmers, agricultural educators, policy makers and prospective farmers are invited to participate. For more information call 692-4061 or 692-4060. The forum is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station, the V.I. Agriculture Department and Farmers in Action. SBDC Plans QuickBooks Workshop April 24 on St. Croix
UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be conducting a workshop on the QuickBooks Pro 2001 computer application from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the UVI SBDC training center, Sunshine Mall Lower Level, St. Croix.
