0

May 20, 2003 – Rehabilitation of V.I. National Park visitor facilities at Hawksnest Bay is expected to get under way in mid-June and be completed by early December, according to a release.
The project involves removing the existing facilities seaward of the parking lot and replacing them with new facilities that will include a two large picnic shelters, changing station, a four-seat vault toilet, an information kiosk, a sidewalk and "lots of seagrape trees."
An alternate trail on the east end of the parking lot will provide access to the beach.
While the construction work is under way, half of the parking lot will be closed to the public. To compensate for the temporary loss of parking spaces, the release stated, the park has arranged for Paradise Taxi to provide safari bus shuttle service between Cruz Bay and Hawksnest Bay.
The safaris will leave from and return to the National Park maintenance parking lot in the gut. Service will be $1 one way and $2 round trip. Trip schedules are to be announced
"The redevelopment project is important and upon completion will improve local and visitors' appreciation and satisfaction of Hawksnest Beach," the release stated.
Further more information, call Walt Keyes, park engineer, at 693-8989 ext. 24.
