PRE-1999 PROPERTY TAX AMNESTY KICKS IN MAY 27

May 20, 2003 – Property owners will get a tax break on May 27 when a 90-day real property tax payment amnesty period commences, Finance Commissioner Bernice Turnbull announced this week. It will be in effect through Aug. 26.
Gov. Charles W. Turnbull signed this legislation, sponsored by the Senate majority caucus, on May 12.
All interest and penalties for real property taxes owed for years prior to 1999 will be waived for any real property tax bill required by law.
Taxpayers with delinquent 1998 and prior real property taxes are urged to make payment of these taxes at the Finance Department's Treasury Division within the period. Payments may be made by cash, certified check, Visa or MasterCard charge cards, or money order.
The collection of property taxes from 1999 forward and any new billing of property taxes have been suspended temporarily as a result of a District Court ruling earlier this month.
Any delinquent property taxes for tax years prior to 1999 which remain unpaid after Aug. 26 will be subject to interest and/or penalty assessments at the statutory rate. Any property for which there are delinquent real property taxes will be subject to being offered for sale at public auction as provided by law.
