St. John Beaches Get Kudos for Cleanliness

June 24, 2004 – In its June issue, Organic Style magazine names St. John's beaches collectively as among the cleanest in the United States.
"That's why the tourists come," said Kathy Demar, who owns Vacation Homes on St. John.
The article credits the presence of V.I. National Park with keeping St. John's beaches clean. It singles out Trunk Bay, Hawksnest Bay, Leinster Bay and Honeymoon Bay but adds that the island has 40 or so beaches with "crystalline water, white sand, palm trees and warm sun."
It also suggests that readers stay at "one of the island's many eco-resorts." It specifically names Concordia Eco-tents.
Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards said in a release that "the lack of development on St. John allows lush green foliage to line the dramatic mountainside that sets the stage for breathtaking white-sand beaches."
The magazine picked eight beach destinations as the nation's best for their pristine shores and fresh clean air. The others on the list: the south shore of Lake Superior, eastern Maui in Hawaii, Kilauea Point in Kauai, Hawaii, the Central Oregon Coast, the Lost Coast in California, Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island in North Carolina, and Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
Organic Style is circulated to 615,000 readers.
