Island Council to Discuss Constitutional Convention

0

Nov. 22, 2004 –– The Island Council Planning Committee, an arm of the St. John Community Foundation, will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Legislature Building on St. John to learn about the Constitutional Convention slated for March 2006.
The speaker will be Sen. Shawn-Michael Malone.
Malone introduced the bill that calls for the Constitutional Convention. His colleagues approved it Sept. 30. Delegates to the convention will be chosen in a special election to be held in February 2006. Each district will have 13 representatives, with two of those from St. Thomas-St. John coming from St. John.
Carole DeSenne, the Community Foundation director, said the community needs to be educated on the Constitutional Convention. She said at a recent meeting, only three of the 60 people attending knew anything about the Constitutional Convention.
She said the Community Foundation could serve as a conduit so those attending the Constitutional Convention will know what St. John wants to see included.
DeSenne said she sees that a Constitutional Convention and the development of Island Councils both have a direct bearing on government.
"We all need to work together," she said.
Call the Community Foundation at 693-9410 for more information.
