Feb. 6, 2005 — Devon Smith continued stunning batting to surpass the Leeward Islands' 262 with an impressive 279 for three on the second day of their Carib Beer Series cricket match at Cancryn Cricket Grounds on Saturday.
Smith racked up 135 with a series of fours, including a spectacular six that crashed into the roof of the press box.
A spectator ran out onto the pitch to congratulate Smith when he reached his century. He finished not out.
Junior Murray reached a half-century with only three wickets down, finishing the day not out with 61.
The first wicket fell as Craig Emmanuel's impressive, decisive batting ended leg before wicket on the second ball after lunch. He finished with 24.
Sergio Fedee batted strong, scoring 37 before being caught by Omari Banks.
Leewards opened the day with an overnight score of 252 for 8 but were quickly dismissed Saturday morning.
Carl Simon, the not out overnight batsman, was caught by Emmanuel as play resumed Saturday off a Darren Sammy bowl to drop the 9th wicket at 256.
Simon finished with 18.
Moments later Kerry Jeremy was caught by H. Shallow to end the Leewards' batting stand at 262.
Adam Sanford was not out with naught.
Both opening Leewards batsmen, Shane Jeffers and Tonito Willett, reached half-centuries Friday before the first wicket fell.
Jeffers lead the Leewards with 69 before being caught by off-spin bowler Shane Shillingford.
Tonito Willett reached 51 before being bowled by medium-pacer Darren Sammy.
Devon Smith made a dazzling play to catch Sylvester Joseph at 148 for 3, ending the Windward's string of fielding mistakes, including numerous dropped balls and failed stops. Emmanuel had dropped a relatively easy catch after Jeffers lobbed the ball high off a Rawle Lewis bowl.
