The Nursing Journey … The Past, Present and Future Lecture

March 7, 2005 — University of the Virgin Islands Alumna Jean Davis Phaire will be the guest speaker at the UVI Distinguished Nurse Lecture Series, scheduled for March 14-16. Once employed at the Knud Hansen Memorial Hospital, Phaire is now responsible for a multi-million dollar operation as the vice president for Patient Services at Bon Secours Baltimore Health System in Maryland. There she manages inpatient medical, surgical, critical care, pharmacy, emergency, perioperative and psychiatric services. She is also responsible for clinical education and outpatient renal services. Phaire, a registered nurse, also holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing and a certification in the business of nursing. She is a nurse executive, entrepreneur and educator.
Phaire's lecture is entitled "The Nursing Journey … The Past, Present and Future," and will examine the evolution of nursing over the past 30 years. Phaire will discuss things that are constant in the nursing profession despite technological and clinical advances. The free public lecture will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 in room B-110 of the Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus. It will be videoconferenced to The Theater, room EC-401, on the St. Croix campus.
Phaire will also meet with the staff of the Myrah Keating Smith Clinic on St. John at 9 a.m. Monday, March 14. She will give a presentation in Conference Room A at the Roy L. Schneider Hospital at 2 p.m. the same day.
Healthcare professionals who attend Phaire's presentation at UVI and the Myrah Keating Smith Clinic will have the opportunity to earn one continuing education contact hour credit unit. An administrative fee of $5 will be charged to healthcare professionals wishing to earn the credit unit.
Phaire, who earned her associate's degree in nursing from the then College of the Virgin Islands in 1968, remains active in the University's Alumni Association. She has provided consultation to nursing homes regarding administrative operations. Phaire continues to serve as a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and mentors nursing students from local colleges and universities, such as the University of Maryland graduate nursing program.
The Distinguished Nurse Lecture Series, sponsored by the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation, seeks to bring to the Virgin Islands community nursing leaders who are known and recognized nationally and internationally.
