April 23, 2005 – The V.I. Police Department is offering a $2,500 reward to anyone who can give them information leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old man suspected of slaying Eddy Antonio Mazara Monday night.
Police found 27-year-old Mazara, of the Dominican Republic, laying face down about 9:30 p.m. in Anna's Retreat, after residents reported gunshots in the area. Mazara later died of gunshot wounds at the Roy L. Schneider Hospital.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said Friday the suspect in this incident is known as Junior Melende Castro or Augustin Mejia Gonzales and is a native of the Dominican Republic. The man has a light complexion and is often called by the nicknames "Cuerva" and "Wendy."
According to a release issued Friday, the police believe the suspect is armed and dangerous. Police are not sure whether the man is still in the territory.
On Thursday, a wanted poster featuring a photo of the suspect was circulated throughout the territory and neighboring islands.
"We're sending his photo throughout the Caribbean," Hannah said, to make sure the suspect is captured.
However, so far police have been unable to e-mail the photo to the Source.
Mazara's death was the fourth homicide on St. Thomas this year and the ninth in the territory.
Anyone with information on the suspect can call the major crimes unit at 715-5534, 715-5546 or 911.
Any information given will be held in strict confidence, according to police.
