Oct. 6, 2005 – The Angel "Chico" Morales Village, which opens Friday at the Agricultural Fairgrounds in Estate Lower Love, will be the site of activities marking the end of Hispanic Heritage month. Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m.
Hispanic Heritage month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is designed to raise the awareness of the community of the rich blends of culture that is the background of the Virgin Islands, especially St. Croix.
The Virgin Islands Puerto Rico Friendship Civic Committee is coordinating the activities. The committee has sponsored several events including children's workshops and a queen show and presentation. The St Croix Economic Development Association held a Latin jazz night during their regular monthly Sunset jazz activity in Frederiksted.
The village, which runs from Friday through Monday, is named in honor of 83-year-old Angel "Chico" Morales who came to St. Croix in 1922 from the town of Comerio in Puerto Rico. Morales was instrumental in promoting Puerto Rican culture on St. Croix, initiating the first Three Kings Day parade and establishing a restaurant in Frederiksted specializing in Puerto Rican food.
