Oct. 13, 2005 – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority will host a series of Recycling Fairs in recognition of America Recycles 2005. The fairs will introduce new recycling collection and disposal programs and promote existing programs, according to a press release from VIWMA.
As part of this effort, VIWMA, in conjunction with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources Division of Environmental Protection, will be introducing a used cellular phone collection and disposal program. An electronic or "E-waste" recycling program that will collect and dispose of computers, monitors, CPU's, scanners, printers, fax machines and telephones will also be introduced.
Another program being promoted is the Do-It-Yourself Used Oil Collection Program. There are already several collection sites in the territory that are used to collect oil from residents who have generated five gallons or more of used motor oil per month. These sites are the Public Works Motor Pool and Bovoni Landfill on St. Thomas, the Susannaberg Transfer Station on St. John, and the Public Works Anna's Hope Compound on St. Croix.
The public is invited to bring their used motor oil, old cell phones and electronic waste out on the days of the fairs for collection and disposal by VIWMA.
St. John on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Winston Wells Baseball Field, Cruz Bay.
St. Thomas on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Fort Christian Parking Lot.
St. Croix, Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Sunny Isle Parking Lot (by Wendy's).
