Big Money Up for Grabs in Booth-Decorating Contest

Dec. 27, 2005 – The Frederiksted Economic Development Association will sponsor a booth-decorating contest at this year's Crucian Christmas Festival Village, Rupert Ross Jr., president of the organization, said Tuesday.
The winning booth could be awarded $1,000, with $500 for second place and $300 for third place — that is, according to Ross, if all the booths in the village paint and decorate.
FEDA has devised a sliding scale of incentives based on the amount of participation from the booth owners.
Judging of the booths will take place on Thursday, the opening day of the Village. The monetary prizes will be distributed at an awards ceremony in January.
Ross said Crucian Christmas Festival board members approached the organization to sponsor the activity. He said the involvement of FEDA in this venture is in keeping with the mission of the organization, which is to enhance the image of Frederiksted. Ross says the monetary incentives will make the Christmas Village attractive to residents and visitors alike.
The civic organization, best known for organizing the monthly Sunset Jazz concerts, was founded in 1996.
Here is the sliding scale for prizes as set by FEDA:
— If 100 percent of the booths are painted and decorated, FEDA will award 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place certificates to be displayed in the winners' booths throughout the operation of the village and a monetary award of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $300 for third place.
— If 75 percent of the booths, but less than 100 percent, are painted and decorated, FEDA will award certificates to the winners and monetary awards of $650 for first place, $400 for second place, and $250 for third place.
— If 50 percent of the booths, but less than 70 percent, are painted and decorated, FEDA will award certificates to the winners and monetary awards of $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place.
— If less than 50 percent of the booths are painted and decorated, only winners' certificates will be awarded.
