Hamada Takes Helm of St. George Garden

Feb. 7, 2006-The St. George Village Botanical Garden is under new management, with David Hamada being named horticultural director. Hamada takes the helm of the garden from Dr. Brinsley Burbidge, a botanist who led the 34-year-old organization for three years.
"We were very sorry to see Brinsley go," said Board President Gary Bourdon in a release Monday. "And we decided not to try and replace him with a new executive director. So we asked (Hamada) to come back on staff and take care of the horticultural aspects of the garden."
Hamada was employed as horticulturist at the garden from 1998 to 2002, and has most recently been serving on its board of governors.
"I am really pleased to be back on staff," Hamada said in the same release. "Having been on the board these past couple of years has given me a different perspective on the garden, and now I will be responsible for implementing many of the things we have discussed at board meetings.
"It's going to be a challenge, but one I am ready to meet," he said.
The release stated that Lesley Hoffman has been named administrative director. Hoffman started as a volunteer garden tour guide in 1998, became office manager in 2002 and has been events director for three years.
Boudon said, "It was a natural thing for us to give (Hoffman) more responsibility. She knows the place so well."
The 16-acre St. George Garden has 4,000 plants in its herbarium – the only collection of its kind in the Virgin Islands.
Hoffman said the next event is the Gardens By Moonlight tour on Feb. 12, with Hamada lading a talk on the herbarium.
