Feb. 13, 2006 — Former Sen. Patrick N. Williams, 77, died Saturday at Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Williams served in 1963 to 1964 in the fifth legislature, where he was vice-president.
He was serving as Agriculture commissioner when he ran unsuccessfully in 1986 to regain his seat.
At that time, he said he ran again because he felt the current Legislature was not addressing the territory's economic problems.
"Without money, what are good intentions?" he had said.
Williams said in 1986 he wanted to give agriculture a higher priority.
Gov. Charles Turnbull, in a Sunday press release, said that Williams also served as Board of Education chairman.
"The Virgin Islands has lost a civil servant who tirelessly sought to improve the quality of life in the territory," Turnbull said.
He expressed "profound sadness" about Williams' death.
Turnbull called him a dear and cherished colleague.
Sen. Shawn-Michael Malone said in a release to the press that Williams was a high ranking official in the Democratic Party during the Earle B. Ottley era.
He said Williams also served on the University of the Virgin Islands board of trustees.
"Senator Williams' service to the people of the Virgin Islands is commendable and upon whose shoulders many of us stand today," Malone said.
Public Services Commission director Keithley Joseph said Monday that Williams had served as PSC director and as a board member in the 1990s. He did not have the dates.
Williams graduated with a bachelor's degree from Pace University and attended the then-College of the Virgin Islands graduate program.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Inez, and 10 children. They are Glenice, Sharon, Lindel, Wayne, Patrice, Patrick Jr., Donna, Raymond, and Aisha Williams and Denise George. He is also survived by an adopted daughter, Deborah Petersen.
"He was a loving, caring dad," daughter Glenice Williams said Monday.
She said he had 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Glenice Williams said funeral arrangements are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 21.
