Dear Source:
I would like to express my thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Heywood family for the wonderful article honoring and remembering my father, Herbert Hosea Heywood. As one of the two Tuskegee Airmen from the U.S. Virgin Islands, my father took risks, along with the other pilots, as he entered a new territory for Black military members.
From 1968 to the present, following in my father's footstep, my sisters, brothers, daughter, and I [Herbert Jr., Marcelle, Carmen, Martin, Cenita, and Saadia] all joined the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. Together we've served during the Viet Nam, Persian Gulf, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Wars. During these times when many of our fellow Virgin Islanders are being deployed to the Middle East, we would all like to thank and recognize the Virgin Islands' military men and women for their contributions.
Black History Month is not only a time for honoring those who have contributed to the struggle for equality throughout the years, but a time for thanking those who continue the struggle.
