Women's Jogger Jam Set for March 12

0

Feb. 23, 2006 – The 24th annual Women's Jogger Jam will be run, walked, jogged or toddled on Sunday, March 12.
The yearly race that raises money for the Family Resource Center begins at 5 p.m. at the Fruit Bowl in Wheatley Center. The two-mile race also ends there, after a course that twice circumnavigates Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The Fruit Bowl has sponsored the event – with support from the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners – for 22 years. The race had no sponsors the first two years.
David Goldberg, a second-generation Fruit Bowler, said Thursday, "We're proud to be sponsors for the Women's Jogger Jam for all these years."
Goldberg is the son of Carol and Marty Goldberg, who opened the popular produce store in 1975.
David Goldberg remembers toddling around the store when his mother and father ran it. Now he runs it along with manager James Clark.
There will be three generations of Goldbergs in this year's race. "My sister, my mom and my sister's daughter – and maybe even my daughter – will be participating," Goldberg said.
Prizes are awarded in several categories including top three finishers in seven age categories, a team challenge trophy to the group or organization with the most participants, and T-shirts for the first 200 registered finishers.
Along with 60 percent of the registration fee, The Fruit Bowl donates $5 to the Family Resource Center for every female who crosses the finish line.
Last year 264 females, including women and children, finished the race.
Registration is $3 for youth 18 and under, $5 for adults and $4 for STAR members.
Participants can pre-register at The Fruit Bowl, The Caribbean Surf Company at Havensight Mall, GNC Endurance Sports at Port of Sale Mall and at the Jackson Complex Wellness Center at Antilles School.
All expenses including trophies, prizes, advertising, banners and the day's refreshments, which always include ample fresh fruit and drinks, are covered by The Fruit Bowl.
