March 17, 2006 – Senator Pedro Encarnacion recently attended a Firefighters and Homeland Security Ceremony held in the Dominican Republic as part of a Virgin Islands delegation, which included representatives from the VIPD and VI Homeland Security.
During the ceremony Senator Encarnacion received the Keys to The City and presented commemorative plaques to Governor Morla Lluveres; the police and fire generals and a representative of the Presidency. Senator Encarnacion was also awarded the title of Honorary Fire Brigade Colonel.
Senator Encarnacion elaborated on the importance of homeland security policies and fire fighters' roles in emergency medical services.
"Officials involved in safety and rescue in the Caribbean islands have a responsibility to work cohesively; to protect our respective citizens and our tourism product," said Senator Encarnacion.
Senator Encarnacion was invited to the ceremony by the Dominican Republic delegation during the Fire Chief Conference held in October on St. Croix.
"The trip was very productive as we were able to interact and exchange safety initiatives with our Caribbean neighbors," concluded Senator Encarnacion.
