Hovensa Recognized for Donation to UVI Nursing Students

0

March 21, 2006 — During the University of the Virgin Islands' 44th annual Charter Day ceremony, Hovensa was recognized March 13 by the members of UVI's Class of 2006 who will receive a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing for a donation made by the company to the prospective graduate nurses.
The donation was prompted by a letter, which Ms. Dawn Grell, the president of the group, sent to Hovensa requesting financial assistance for two projects. One of the projects was for the 13 prospective graduate nurses to attend a post-graduation review in preparation for taking an exam administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. This is the exam that a nursing school graduate must pass in order to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Virgin Islands.
After receiving the letter, the company made an inquiry and learned that the anticipated cost of the 13 prospective nursing graduates attending the review, which will be given in Tampa, Fla., will be approximately $17,000. The company then made a donation of $12,000 to the 2006 nursing class. Hovensa Vice president Alex Moorhead said that this amount will cover the full cost of the students' airfare to Tampa and their enrollment in the review conducted by a nationally recognized test review company.
