March 31, 2006 – The State Historic Preservation Office and the Virgin Islands Danish Apprenticeship (VIDA) Initiative will begin the fourth session of the VIDA program on lime, plasterwork, masonry, arch and column restoration of historic buildings and structures on Monday, April 4, according to a press release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. This five-week session will be held at the Fort Frederik Museum.
A team of Danish masons will instruct apprentices from Youth Build St. Croix/VIHA and the St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center in historic masonry and plaster work. The initiative will provide an introductory course on historic buildings and masonry practices. It will allow VIDA to identify potential artisans who can be employed in the revitalization effort of our historic towns and structures.
For more information, call the State Historic Preservation Offices, on St. Croix at 773-1082, ext. 2208, on St. Thomas at 776-8605, or the Fort Frederik Museum at 772-2021.
