April 21, 2006 — The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands has distributed more than 1,800 thesauruses to all seventh-grade students on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, announced CFVI President Dee Baecher-Brown.
All the thesauruses are provided through the Margate Friends of the Children Fund, a permanent fund at CFVI established by Margate Management in 2002.
The fund — based on the premise that every child deserves unconditional love and a world of opportunities — is a response to Margate's vision and commitment to children's education in the Virgin Islands.
The thesaurus project of the Margate Fund is committed to the annual donation and distribution of a thesaurus to every seventh-grade student in the U.S.V.I. public school system. "A thesaurus is a valuable tool that can help the seventh-grade student expand his or her vocabulary knowledge and gain a better understanding of word relationships as they prepare for high school and beyond," explained Baecher-Brown.
The CFVI, established in 1990 to serve the children and families of the Virgin Islands, currently has close to 80 named funds at the foundation. Last year, CFVI provided more than $1.25 million in grants, scholarships and program support in the USVI.
