Tax Rebate and Refund Checks On the Way

0

May 21, 2008 — Economic stimulus rebate checks and income tax refunds are on the way but will arrive separately in the mail, according to Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Director Gizette Thomas.
Residents entitled to refunds will receive those checks first, and will subsequently receive a separate rebate check, Thomas explained in a statement issued Wednesday. Taxpayers with copies of their 2007 income tax return can calculate how much rebate money they are entitled to receive by visiting BIR's website and using the online calculator, she added.
Rebate checks will be used to offset any outstanding taxes or child-support obligations, Thomas added.
"The rebate check is an advance of credits allowed on the 2008 income tax refund, and therefore is subject to the same offset rules as an income tax refund," she explained.
Residents who have already received their rebate checks but have questions about the amount can also visit the BIR website or call 715-1040, ext. 2237, on St. Thomas, or 773-1040, ext. 4222, on St. Croix.
Income tax returns are still being processed, and residents who have not yet received their checks are asked to be patient and refrain from calling BIR offices until June, the statement said.
