June 20, 2009 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums in conjunction with the Friends of the Public Libraries will host territory-wide library summer reading programs.
The programs are based on three themes: Cultural Connection – children will learn about various cultures; Book-A-Trip Around the World – children will travel to many places around the world through a book; and Catch the Reading Bug! – children will be encouraged to build a love for reading.
Young readers interested in participating should visit their local public library and have a parent/guardian complete a registration form. During the summer, the participants will check out books to read and participate in activities such as story-time and scheduled performances. Workbook journals will be distributed filled with a recommended reading list for the particular age groups and a journal to record the books read during the summer.
The Florence Williams Public Libraries and the Athalie Petersen Public Library on St. Croix invite children in grades 1-8 to participate in the summer reading program from June 29 Aug. 7. This years theme is Cultural Connection. Registration for the programs at both libraries begins on June 22 and ends on June 26. For more information, contact Linneth Mercado at 773-5715.
