June 24, 2009 — The 40 and Over Basketball league playoffs continued on Tuesday with the undefeated Man Dem and the East Siders recording easy victories at the Educational Complex gymnasium.
Man Dem 74, Kings 47
In the early game, Man Den blew out the Kings 74-47 behind 22 points from Austin Jacobs and 19 points from Francis Romain. Calvin Percival also chipped in with 11 points for the winners. For the Kings, Alfredo Edwards netted 15 and Patrick Edwards contributed 11 for the only players in double figures in the losing effort.
After taking a 14-8 first quarter, Man Dem followed that up with a 21-13 second period to take a 35-21 halftime lead. They coasted to victory from there.
East Siders 52, Zion 32
East Siders got 12 fourth quarter points from Pedro “Saba” Felix in the night’s second game and outscored Zion 22-9 in the period to extend a seven-point third-quarter lead to a 20 point blowout.
Seven points from Marc Felix in the opening period help the East Siders to take a quick 15-10 lead over Zion.
Tight defense by the East Siders in the second quarter allowed Zion a mere four points for a 23-14 lead at the half.
Zion would have its best offensive output in the third period, outscoring the East Siders 9-7 to pull within seven points of the lead at 30-23 at the end of three quarters of play. But any hopes of further cutting into the lead in the final period were quickly dashed. Saba exploded for his 12 fourth-quarter points on his way to a game high 20. Most of Saba’s damage, however, was done at the free throw line where he was eight of eleven from the charity stripes. Zion never quit in the game but with fatigue now a major issue in the fourth quarter, the East Siders looked the fresher of the two teams and it was reflected in the final outcome.
Marc Felix contributed 16 points to the East Siders' winning effort. Devon Martin led Zion offensively with 10 points and Rawle Caines chipped in nine.
