SGVBG's "Second Saturday" Shows How to Make Paper

0

Island youngsters and their parents will learn how to make paper out of plants at St. George Village Botanical Garden’s “Second Saturdays” program on Nov. 14.

“Many plants provide fibers that can be woven into rope and clothing or even mashed into paper,” says Melanie L. Feltmate, education coordinator of the garden. “In this workshop, families will really get to experiment with papermaking. They will try to make paper out of papyrus like the Ancient Egyptians first did, then they will make homemade paper out of plants, and finally out of recycled paper.” Feltmate guarantees a good time for the whole family.
Second Saturday is held from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month in the Bodine Visitors’ Center at SGVBG. Children ages 6 and up are invited and must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person for members and $8 per person for non-members to cover all materials. Space for the workshop is limited, so call 692-2874 right away to register.
