The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) informs consumers of a major recall issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC announced the recall of 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher Price logo, indicating that the product has defective hardware that can cause toddlers and infants to suffocate. An estimated amount of 1.2 million units have been distributed in the United States. Stork Craft drop-side cribs are made by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. of British Columbia, Canada.
Consumers should immediately stop using this product. The recall of this product is due to the design and structure of the crib. The cribs’ drop-sides are attached with plastic hardware that can detach, and, as a result, create a space between the crib wall and the adjacent mattress.
CPSC has reported that there have been 110 documented incidents of drop-side detachment. The breakdown of the incidents includes 67 for the United States and 43 for Canada. Four of these incidents have resulted in suffocation, and 20 resulted in falls causing injuries.
Major retailers recognized as carrying the recalled cribs included BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penny, Kmart, Sears, USA Baby, Wal-Mart and several online stores such as Target.com, Amazon.com and Walmart.com. The cribs were sold at these locations between January 1993 and October 2009.
“It is part of the department’s procedures to send investigators out in the field to inspect stores that were documented as carrying the recalled product or other possible retailers. On Tuesday, Nov. 24, investigators on St. Thomas and St. Croix checked the Kmart stores and did not find any Stork Craft cribs being sold. On St. Thomas, Pricesmart and Cost-U-Less were also confirmed as not carrying any of the recalled cribs. Consumers, however, still need to verify that they have not purchased this crib online, from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Mainland,” said Commissioner Biggs.
The DLCA will continue to monitor national recalls and continue to issue announcements as part of its mission of Assisting, Educating and Protecting Consumers.
