Education Human Resources Director Karen L. Blyden advises all the territorial public school teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff, including administrators, that the Department of Education will pay 100 percent of tuition costs and associated fees for one three-credit course at the University of the VirginIslands for the spring 2010 semester. Blyden says the employee scholarship program is in keeping with the department’s commitment to provide employees with professional development opportunities.
All courses offered to paraprofessionals will be at the undergraduate level, while courses offered to teachers and other non-teaching staff can be either at the graduate or undergraduate level. Interested persons can sign-up between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., from Wednesday, Dec. 2 through Friday, Dec. 11.Teachers must enroll in courses leading to certification, while paraprofessionals must enroll in education courses or other courses leading to an education degree. Other non-teaching staff must enroll in a course related to duties they perform at the department. Individuals are further reminded that course textbooks are their sole responsibility and reimbursement to the department will be required in the event they fail a course.
Blyden said, “Due to the limited number of available courses, individuals are asked to act quickly as the selections will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. No phone sign-ups will be allowed.Visit the HR offices located at 1834 Kongens Gade for the St. Thomas-St. John District and the Vitraco Mall located at Orange Grovefor the St. Croix District.”
