The Diageo Hummers opened their 2010-11 Bob Owens playoff bid with a bang on Thursday by hammering Set It Off 14-2, and the Cartel surprised the powerful Softball Inc. squad 20-14 at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park.
Hummers 14, Set it Off 2
Edgardo Sanes blasted three home runs and Mario Christian had two as they powered the Hummers to a 14-2 lopsided victory over Set it Off in Thursday’s early game. The Hummers, one of the teams with a good chance of dethroning the defending champions Seaborne Stealers, finished with 14 runs on 13 hits and three errors, while Set it Off plated two runs on seven hits and two errors.
The winning pitcher was the always tough Jerry Vialet while Julio Carmona took the loss. Top batters for the Hummers were Sanes (3 for 3 with three home runs and three RBIs) and Christian (3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs). For Set it Off, Juan Burgos was 1 for 2 with a home run and one RBI.
Cartel 20, Softball Inc. 14
Despite a record that places them near the bottom of the league standings, if all the Cartel players show up to play, they can compete with just about anyone in the league. Softball Inc. found out just how true that was after they were outslugged 20-14 by a re-energized Cartel squad in game two on Thursday.
It was the Cartel with 20 runs on 18 hits and three errors while Softball Inc. finished with 14 runs on 14 hits and two errors. Ian Lewis hit and pitched his team to victory, winning on the mound and going 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs. He was well-supported by first baseman Daren Lewis, who was 2 for 2 with two home runs and four RBIs. For Softball Inc., Angel Guzman was 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs, and Antonio Cruz was 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Bill Harris got the loss on the hill for Softball Inc.
