Going Against the Grain Peace Coalition, an organization founded by Daily News columnist, author and activist Devin “Dutchie” Robinson, has chosen this year’s winner of “The Seven Year Project.”
The Seven Year Project is a program that was launched by Robinson to award one Virgin Island student and one parent with an expense paid trip to one of the Seven World Wonders over the next seven years.
Students were instructed to read a book that was selected by the Peace Coalition. This year’s book selection was, “The Promise,” written by judge and motivational speaker Oswald Scott. The book tells a story about a young man who served time in prison and returned to his old neighborhood after his stint was over. Before leaving, he was urged by elders in prison to never return. When he left prison he was torn between doing right and wrong.
The students were given a rubric as a guide on what to write. Virgin Islanders living locally and abroad donated funds through the Peace Coalition’s Web site at www.ipromotepeace.org. The local businesses that sponsored this project were The V.I. Lottery, Ackley Media,The BUZZ radio, Eudora Kean High School, Community Education Initiative, Rotary Club East and the office of Senator Celestino White.
Robinson said, “This will be a breakthrough moment for the winner. Being able to have an exotic experience around the world will prove to be critical to their success.”
The winner will be announced on “The Madd House with Rash” on the radio to be aired on 105 JMZ at 6:30 am on June 1.
This year, the trip takes the winner to their choice of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Niagara Falls in Canada, or the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
