The V.I. Police Department will hold its gun buy-back program on St. John on Nov. 18 and 19 instead of the previously announced Nov. 11 and 12. It will from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oppenheimer pavilion, the department said in a press release issued Sunday.

Oppenheimer pavilion is located at Hawksnest Bay and is the next beach east of the main Hawksnest Bay on North Shore Road.

“The change is due to activities occurring on St. John on Veteran’s Day, which is Nov. 11,” Deputy Police Chief Darren Foy said. “The following weekend, Nov. 18 and 19, will be more conducive for a successful gun buy back program on St. John.”

Foy reminded the residents to safely transport any firearm to the buy back site by placing it in the trunk of their cars. No questions will be asked of people turning in weapons. They will be paid cash equal to the listed value of the weapon.

Foy thanked all the St. John residents who have expressed their appreciation for bringing the program to the island and have offered to assist by distributing flyers and posting the information at their work places, community organizations, churches and throughout the community.

“The residents of St. John are coming together in this venture which will get a number of unregistered firearms off the streets and ensure that those weapons do not fall into the hands of persons who have bad intentions,” Foy said.
