The Humane Society of St. Thomas is inviting public school educators who teach kindergarten through sixth grade to reserve one of 51 spots in its new, free and fun Kind Newsprogram.
Thanks to a generous $1,000 Anderson Family Teacher Grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, the society has ordered 51 year-long classroom subscriptions to Kind News magazine. Produced five times each school year by the Humane Society of the United States, Kind News encourages young learners to coexist humanely with animals, celebrate the human-animal bond and protect creatures who cannot protect themselves. Students will learn about the lives of dogs, cats, horses, sea creatures, prairie dogs and other animals from around the world.
St. Thomas public school teachers who register for the free program by Feb. 15 will receive the first of five classroom kits this March or April, and the last in January or February of 2013. Teachers may also request a volunteer guest teacher to come to their classroom and lead a Kind News lesson. Two area educators and animal lovers, Bonnie Braga and Pamela New, have volunteered to serve in this position.
The Humane Society has ordered:
· 18 Primary Edition subscriptions, for students in grades K-2.
· 18 Junior Edition subscriptions, for students in grades 3-4.
· 15 Senior Edition subscriptions, for students in grades 5-6.
Those who teach one of these age groups should reserve a spot before Feb. 20 by writing [email protected] with their name, school, grade level and contact information.
