Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama was one of the first on Broadway to examine African-American life on the cusp of the Civil Rights Era. This moving and brilliant play has stood the test of time as it tells the struggle of one man’s search for dignity and purpose amidst the prejudice of his times and the objections of his family, who feel his ambition is ill placed.
Synopsis: Walter Younger and his mother, Lena, both yearn to move their family out of Chicago’s Southside ghetto. When Lena’s late husband’s insurance check arrives, Lena hopes to use it to buy a house in a white neighborhood — while Walter hopes to invest it in a liquor business.
Cast: Brother (Walter Lee), an intense young man in his mid-thirties; Ruth, his wife, a strong-willed woman of the same age; Travis, their young headstrong son of 12; Beneatha, his progressively-minded radical sister in her 20s; Mama (Lena), the matriarch of the family and mother to Travis and Beneatha; Joseph, an African exchange student and suitor of Beneatha; George, an African-American all collegiate preppy and suitor of Beneatha; Bobo, Travis’ friend and business partner; Karl Linder, a middle aged Caucasian male; and two moving men.
