Officers of the Traffic Investigation Bureau will continue Tint Meter Clinics on Friday and Saturday at the Sunshine Mall in west St. Croix.

The bureau recently announced it will step up enforcement of the vehicle tint and other rules and regulations of the road.

The clinics will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Officers will be on hand with a tint-metering device to tell drivers if the tint on their windows meets or exceeds rules on how dark it’s allowed to be.

If any vehicle found to have less than 35 percent total visible light transmission, officers will ask the driver to remove the tint. Car owners can either remove it on the spot or take their vehicles to another location and remove the tint.

"Be aware that anytime you operate an improperly tinted vehicle on the public roads you are breaking the law and can be fined," according to the V.I. Police Department news release announcing the clinics.

As the Police Department steps up this enforcement for the general public, private vehicles of all police officers and civilian personnel have been ordered by Police Commissioner-designate Rodney F. Querrard Sr. to have their window tint checked and, if they find it is darker than legally allowed, to have it removed.

Vehicles also will be checked for license and registration compliance and insurance, as per recent instructions from Querrard.

At the clinics officers will also check to make sure driver licenses, registration and insurance are all up to date on all private vehicles.
