UVI’s School of Education Invitation for Third-Party Testimony The School of Education at the University of the Virgin Islands is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) on Nov. 17-20. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the institution (graduate, present or former faculty member, employer or graduate). We invite you to submit written testimony to: Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036-1023. Or by e-mail to: [email protected].
Correspondence, which must be received by NCATE no later than three months prior to the visit, will be submitted to the School of Education for response via NCATE’s Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS). NCATE will not upload anonymous comments to the Board of Examiners (BOE) team or the School of Education.
UVI Board Approves Info Tech Degree; Sets Operating Budget; Commends President Hall In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on Saturday, June 15, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees approved a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Information Systems and Technology, the fiscal year 2014 Operating Budget, a new Parking Policy and Traffic Regulation and funding for Reichhold Center renovations.
The Board approved a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems and Technology degree with courses slated to begin in Spring 2014. The new degree is expected to produce graduates able to meet the information technology needs of the territory. Graduates of the program will leave UVI with technology certification and a portfolio of practical experience – senior year courses, Project Management I and II, will require students to provide technological solutions to local entities. Trustee Jennifer Nugent-Hill said the degree will cause “a big shift in the economic development strategy of this territory.” A news release is available from the UVI homepage – http://www.uvi.edu
WUVI 1090 AM, College Radio 1 Present CES Program Tuesdays from St. Croix Every Tuesday, UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service communications staffers host a radio program from 2-3 p.m. from the Albert A. Sheen Campus on student radio station WUVI 1090 AM. The program focuses on agriculture, research and community research programs, outreach efforts and training classes offered by the Cooperative Extension Service and the Agricultural Experiment Station. The program is hosted in collaboration with College Radio 1 and College Voices UnZipped. WUVI 1090 AM broadcasts daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Programming is also streamed live on the Internet at http://wuvi.am/. UVI Marine Science and VI EPSCoR to be Featured on WTJX ‘Face to Face’ Program June 19 V.I. Public Television’s “Face to Face” program with Addie Ottley will feature guests from UVI’s EPSCoR and Marine Science programs on Wednesday, June 19. The program airs at 8 p.m. on WTJX Channel 12. VI-EPSCoR is the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research.
Success of UVI’s ‘50 for 50’ Campaign Continues to Receive National Recognition The historic success of UVI’s “50 for 50” Campaign during the University’s 2012 Golden Jubilee year continues to be recognized nationally. The June edition of the magazine "Business Officer," published by the National Association of College and University Business Officers, features a submission by UVI President Dr. David Hall. The article includes a description of the efforts that led to an increase in the number of UVI alumni who financially support the university from 13 percent to 42 percent in one year. This effort was featured earlier in Dr. Hall’s "The Virgin Islands Miracle" article, which was carried by the Huffington Post, the HBCU Digest, the Tom Joyner Foundation website and HBCU Connect.
The “50 for 50” Campaign has also resulted in the UVI Alumni Association being nominated for the HBCU National Alumni Association of the Year Award. See related item below.
Reichhold Center Seeks Volunteers for 35th Anniversary Season Launch at ‘Business After Hours’ UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts is seeking volunteers to assist with its upcoming “Business After Hours” activity – the annual season launch party for the Reichhold’s upcoming performance line-up. The Center will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary season and is seeking assistance from individuals with outgoing and friendly personalities and a sincere appreciation for the arts. The season launch “Business After Hours” event, held in conjunction with the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce, takes place on Thursday, Aug. 22. Register Now for UVI’s Summer Session II: Deadline June 19 The University of the Virgin Islands invites current and prospective students to register for summer classes. Summer Session II runs from June 20 to July 26. The registration deadline for the second summer session is June 19.
UVI Business Professor and Summer Sessions Coordinator Dr. Tonjia Coverdale encouraged everyone to see what UVI Summer Sessions have to offer. She said courses may be beneficial for people of all ages who want to enhance their education, re-tool their skills for a career change, or start a degree program. “You don’t have to be enrolled or matriculated at UVI to take courses,” Dr. Coverdale said. Summer Sessions also provide a good opportunity for matriculated students to stay in sequence with courses for their respective degree programs. UVI Students Can Take Selected Summer Courses Through UVI ONLINE The University of the Virgin Islands offers students the ability to take selected summer courses online. While traveling or otherwise away from campus, students can complete course work online this summer through UVI ONLINE. UVI Conducting English and Math Placement Tests for 2013 Summer Sessions and Fall Semester The University of the Virgin Islands is conducting mathematics and English placement testing for the Summer and Fall 2013 semesters. See dates, times and locations for the remaining tests below. Both tests are computer-based and are administered simultaneously. There is no set time period for completing the tests, as persons continue until they are finished. However, many individuals are able to finish in approximately one hour. 2013 University Bound Program to Host 50 High School Students at UVI This Summer UVI’s 2013 University Bound Program is scheduled to run from June 23 through July 19, on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen and St. Thomas campuses. A total of approximately 50 students are expected to participate in this summer’s residential component of the program, with students staying in UVI’s residence halls. The program, formerly known as the Upward Bound Program, provides students with academic instruction, individual and small group tutorials and counseling, college admissions information, and cultural, social and recreational activities. The new name reflects a change in the program’s funding source. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Education, University Bound is now locally funded through the Virgin Islands Legislature.
