St. Croix-based Seaborne Airlines and JetBlue Airways now have an interline agreement that means passengers traveling on Seaborne from Virgin Islands airports through Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan won’t have to claim their luggage before connecting to a JetBlue flight, Seaborne announced Monday in a press release.

“If a passenger is connecting from Seaborne to JetBlue, we will honor JetBlue’s first bag free policy,” Bonnie Kuntzler, Seaborne’s customer experience director, said.

She was referring to JetBlue not charging for the first checked bag.

Additionally, Seaborne Airlines tickets will be sold on www.jetblue.com and both JetBlue and Seaborne will be able to issue each other’s boarding passes in the coming weeks.

This news is the latest made by Seaborne as it rapidly expands service throughout the Caribbean in a move to provide service and "backfill" former American Eagle routes. American Eagle stopping flying to Caribbean destinations in April.

With the addition Jan. 15 of the flight to St. Kitts, which continues on to Nevis, and La Romana, Dominican Republic, starting Dec. 12, Seaborne flies to 14 Caribbean airports. They include St. Thomas and St. Croix airports and seaplane bases, Vieques, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and San Juan.

JetBlue carries approximately 30 million customers a year to 79 cities in the United States, Caribbean and Latin America with more than 750 daily flights. Upcoming destinations include Detroit, Mich., Savannah, Ga., and Worcester, Mass. as well as Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and Lima, Peru.
