Two robbers armed with automatic weapons stole about $3,200 from the popular ice cream stand Udder Delight on Friday afternoon, telling the owner "This ain’t no joke," according to witnesses who spoke to the Source.

Wendell Baily, longtime proprietor of Udder Delight, said two men carrying what he said were AK-47s hit the ice cream shop about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Baily described the following sequence of events.

He was was sitting, relaxing for a few minutes inside the store, when he heard what he described as a "rough" sound at the door.

One man approached from the east, the other came up the front steps. The gunmen told him to get to his knees, and one said, "This ain’t no joke."

The two men took about $3,200 in cash Baily had just gotten from the bank and lottery ticket sales. They also took his wallet, he said, along with a gold chain he wore around his neck. The chain had been given to him by his deceased wife, who died 16 years ago, Baily said.

"It’s all I had of her," he said, touching the empty spot on his neck, "that and my wedding band."

Despite the robbery Baily remained open for business and, at about 6 p.m., was on the porch adjacent to the store, playing dominoes with a half dozen friends as usual.

Meanwhile witnesses told the Source that police scoured the area and at least two officers were called up from Magens Bay.

The 911 Emergency Call Center’s police blotter shows a call reporting a first-degree robbery being called in at 12:42 p.m.

As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, police were not able to confirm that incident or that any arrest had been made.
