District Court Judge Curtis V. Gomez Thursday sentenced Melroy Burgan, 25, to five months in prison for possession with intent to distribute marijuana. The prison term is to be followed by three years of supervised release, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe.

Burgan pleaded guilty to the charge on Nov. 5, Sharpe said. According to the plea documents filed in court, on Aug. 17 Burgan traveled from the Ft. Lauderdale- Hollywood International Airport to the Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas with three kilograms of marijuana in his suitcase.

Customs and Border Protection detected the marijuana in Burgan’s suitcase and allowed the suitcase to continue through the normal luggage procedures. Burgan, who lives on St. Thomas, was arrested after he retrieved the suitcase from the luggage carousel.

During questioning, Burgan admitted ownership of the suitcase and all of its contents.

The case was investigated by Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ishmael Meyers Jr.
