Sylvia L. Petersen, also known as "Dahlin,” “Sylvie,” “Miss Pete” and “Nursie," a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, godmother and friend, gracefully and courageously entered into eternal life at her home in Frederiksted, Virgin Islands, on March 19. She retired from the Ingeborg Nesbitt Hospital after 33 years of compassionate and dedicated service as a registered nurse.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Elizabeth A. Petersen and Alexander Charles; siblings: Ethelyn Charles Jackson, Harry O. Peterson, Leroy Charles and Raymond Charles; uncle, Adam Petersen; nephew, Virgil L.R. Henry; and godson, Wayne Hodge.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her siblings: Jane N. Henry and Earl (Phyllis) Charles; sister-in-law, Mavis Peterson; nieces: Vickie-Anne Henry, Vera-Lynn Henry Quattlander, Virginia E. Henry, Velletta Henry Commissiong, O’Keisha (Rolando) Huertas, Jordan Henry Jones, Amiah Huertas, Aziza Commissiong, O’Kerah Peterson, Mavis Peterson and Martha Peterson; nephews: Burton (Deborah) Peterson, Gregory (Rosa) Peterson, Khalil Commissiong, Cole Henry Jones and Rolando Huertas Jr.; and godchildren: Craig Wells, Wayne Payne, Vickie-Anne Henry, Frances McNamara, Gerry Lee James, Nesha Christian-Hendrickson, Marcus Christian-Hendrickson.
She is also survived by hosts of cousins and other relatives to include the Charles, Gill, James, Petersen, Schrader and Williams families; special friends: Lena A. Shulterbrandt and family, Mabel A. Bennerson and family, Evans and Monica Best and family, Haydee Pichardo and family, Ernestine C. Snype and family, Nelarine Sackey and family, Ernestine Richards, Tisha George, Erwin Auguste, the Clarkes, the Mitchel and Watts families; and devoted caregivers: Elizabeth Mitchel and Aurea Clarke.
A viewing will take place at James Funeral Chapel from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. A mass of Christian burial will take place Friday, April 11, at St. Patrick’s Church, Frederiksted, with a viewing at 9:30 a.m. and a service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Frederiksted Cemetery.
