Owner of Biggest St. Croix Radio Station Charged with Tax Evasion

11

Police have arrested Jonathan Cohen, sole owner of JKC Communications Clara Communications and Radio 95, for failure to file and pay corporate and individual income taxes for several years, the V.I. Department of Justice and Internal Revenue Bureau announced Wednesday.

JKC Communications is the parent company of the Isle 95, Sunny 99.5 FM, Mongoose 104.9FM, AM 970-WSTX and WSTX FM-100 radio stations.
According to a statement from Government House, the arrest is one of many more to come as a result of work by the Tax Collection Task Force. The task force is jointly headed by Attorney General Vincent Frazer and IRB Director Claudette Watson Anderson.
"There are many individuals who continue to cheat the Virgin Islands government by failing to file and/or pay taxes, and the task force is putting together the pieces of the puzzle needed to bring these individuals to justice,” Frazer said in a statement.
Cohen is charged with failure to file taxes for a seven-year period from 2004 through 2010. The government alleges that Cohen and his corporations had collective gross income in excess of $10 million during the period of time alleged in the complaint and failed to pay taxes owed to the Government of the Virgin Islands. The government alleges Cohen also failed to file gross receipts tax returns for the same period.
“For far too long, too many have been getting away with not filing or paying their fair share of taxes and, through the work of the task force, it is our goal to bring these individuals to justice and collect any outstanding payments owed,” Frazer said.
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service assisted the IRB in the investigation of this case and will continue to assist the V.I. Government in the upcoming cases, according to Government House.

  1. The one thing most white people hate more than working for black people is paying taxes to a predominantly non-white government. I should know.

  2. Chilliwest, your point is indeed true, especially when you have the privilege of hearing what they have to say when they think you’re not around or in earshot, you really get to hear some really fascinating stuff… I’m quite glad he got busted, the D.O.J. and the I.R.B. need to continue rounding up more of these people and stop harassing those who do indeed pay their taxes…

  3. No, I think what most white people hate more than working for black people is hearing people say what they “think” what white people hate more than working for black people you ignorant racist pig. You’re a true testament to the “Don’t Stop the Carnival” mentality.

  4. How did the companies get their business licenses renewed without filing tax returns? My guess is they had help and the IRS and BIR investigators should keep digging until they find the accomplices.

  5. Excellent points DarkShinobi and Brown Pelican!!!!! I am not a racist; nor a piggy, but a truth teller. It may not be nice to hear or to read about but the veracity of my statements are sound. Martin Luther king Jr. (who was black) used to quote William Cullen Bryant (who was white)…”Truth crushed to earth will rise again.” The moral of the story is, don’t do bad today and deny it tomorrow. Those who lived through your bad ways or were the victims of your enmity and vitriol may decide not to lie about it at some later time. Make sense?

  6. StreetCrimeUnit,

    Your point is well taken.

I am biracial (Light skinned black and German mixed). I, however, consider myself black. The way that I look has allowed me to sit in on ‘white only’ conversations. In a nutshell…..the majority of them view all black people as bad or something detestable. They believe that a black person must prove himself/herself to them prior to gaining some level of acceptance. A sort of ‘guilty by race so prove your case’ mentality. This is the truth for the majority of them. If you look at their resume of atrocities; what they did to the black, the red, and the brown, you can only wonder why black people need to earn acceptance from them. They are no moral compass.

  7. Chilliwest,

That can be said about anyone. The article was not about race, it was about a alleged criminal. it matters not to me what color your skin color is. God knows, i have seen my share of BS artists as well, and they come in all shapes and colors. i do not live on STT full time but spend a great deal of time there . Eventually i want to live there yr round if possible…:) I have seen the superiority complex displayed that you bring up. It does go on no doubt about it, but can the same be said about others as well? Blacks enslaved blacks and sold them thats a fact. Irish ppl were the first slaves in the United States of America.(Mainland) Many ended up in the Virgin Islands as well. I am only putting this out there as a FYI. ok Have a nice day and stay safe…God Bless…:)

  8. chilliwest…you’re a dope, i’m pretty confident in saying i’m probably a little more well traveled than you. Anyone who thinks this is about race is a clown. if you took the color references out of the above statement and inserted the word corrupt anywhere you deem necessary you would be infinitely more correct. corruption is color independent and on this little piece of paradise corruption is a way of life. Sadly it seems that we are approaching the tipping point where people (color be damned) are just gonna leave. if you want to keep clinging to this color nonsense you can pilot the first plane out

  9. Wow, what a side track on the comments. Bottom line, Bravo
to the folks at DOJ and IRB. This is just the tip of the iceberg. All IRB needs to look at now is the companies that import products to the USVI and pay excise and conpare that their sales. They will find many companies importing three to four times what they declare in sales
for many years…..circumventing Gross Receipts Tax.
    Happy hunting.

  10. I agree Marcus,

The entire story got side tracked. if what you say is true, i hope they feel the full extent of the Law come down upon them. I believe in what is right, as most do. Well with that being said, I wish you all Blessings and remember, Be vigilant and Alert lAways Stay Safe..
