Cleaning Up St. Croix for Ironman

0

The St. Croix Environmental Association and St. Croix Ultimate Blue Water Adventures are both planning major cleanups this weekend – before the Captain Morgan 70.3 Ironman Triathlon on Sunday – and they want you to come volunteer and help out.

SEA is gearing up for its fifth "Crucian Litter Elimination Action Now," CLEAN, its annual push to remove litter from the triathlon route.

The route is divided into 25 sections of two-three miles each. SEA is expecting 200-250 volunteers from local schools, churches, businesses and agencies, according to a statement from the organization. In past years, they have removed more than 1,000 bags of litter, several hundred bags of aluminum cans, appliances, metal scraps, tires, and other debris from the 56-mile route. V.I. Regulated Waste Management will provide three large trash bins and V.I. Waste Management Authority will pick up tires and other materials that can’t be placed in bins.

For more information or to join a team, please call Emily Weston at SEA 773-1989 or 277-0386. The start time for most teams is 8 a.m. Saturday morning; however, teams will be working through Sunday afternoon and throughout the upcoming week at various locations.

Please contact Weston on the day of the event for an updated list of teams and start times.

– Junior ROTC: Great Pond to Mt Fancy;
