A 50-year old woman suffering health complications on Sunday was medically evacuated from the cruise ship Carnival Liberty by a Coast Guard helicopter off the coast of Cat Island, Bahamas.

Liberty was sailing out of Florida, bound for the Virgin Islands on the first leg of its cruise. It was scheduled to arrive at St. Thomas on Tuesday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Seventh District command center were notified by the cruise ship about a woman experiencing health complications. A medical crew aboard the cruise ship had examined the patient and contacted the Coast Guard for assistance.

After discussing the woman’s condition with the Coast Guard’s on-duty flight surgeon, doctors determined a medevac was needed.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew deployed to the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, arrived on scene and hoisted the woman and a nurse off of the cruise ship.

The woman was transferred to emergency medical crews in Nassau, Bahamas, and later transferred to Doctor’s Hospital where her condition was listed as stable.
