The resignation of St. John’s top police official, Deputy Chief Maria Colon-Jones, appears to be in the works.

“It’s not official,” V.I. Police Department spokeswoman Melody Rames said Thursday.

Colon-Jones did not respond to an email request for information.

The matter came to light Wednesday during the Senate Finance Committee’s budget hearings. According to published reports, Police Commissioner Rodney Querrard Sr. said that Colon-Jones indicated verbally her intentions. He also said the department is trying to convince her to remain.

Colon-Jones’ VIPD biography indicates she served on St. John as a patrol office from 1996 to 1997, where she moved up through the ranks, serving mainly on St. Thomas, until she was appointed to the top St. John post in 2012.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in education with a concentration in history and police science from the University of the Virgin Islands. She also completed work in criminal justice at Andrew Jackson University in Birmingham, Ala.
