Keys Conquers South Shore Time Trial

0

March 16, 2005 – There are few things more exhilarating as racing a fast bike on a fast course. Sunday’s race course from Divi Hotel to Ha’Penny Beach Road provided the venue and Jamie Keys provided the speed.
The 9.1-mile route was raced as an individual time trial, with the record 39 entrants starting at one minute intervals, as each racer raced the clock. The course is downwind, with large sections of flat terrain, easily making the race the fastest on the annual calendar.
Cycling on St. Croix is exploding in popularity, with the number of athletes doubled from just a few years ago. There were so many starters, that half the field had finished before the last rider had even started.
Keys, of the Endurance Sports squad, won with a time if 21 minutes and 31 seconds, besting teammate John Riggs, who stopped by on his way to work and finished second in 21:48. Juancito Gario of STX 340 was a close third in 22:02.
The next race will be on March 27, starting at Rust Op Twist. The course on the North Shore will feature the first ever Women’s Road Race on St. Croix, as the distaff side will have its own category.
