Stabbings, Assaults Mar Carnival Festivities

Three men were stabbed and several suspects, including two minors, were arrested on assault charges during Carnival events this past week, according to the V.I. Police Department.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old male was stabbed in his stomach while he was in the Carnival village. According to the release, the victim told police an unknown black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks punched him in his face. When he punched him back the suspect stabbed him, according to police.

The second and third victims were stabbed on the waterfront during J’ouvert Thursday morning. One of the victims told police he was in the area dancing when a fight started and several people began swinging knives. He was then stabbed in his left forearm. The other victim was stabbed in his upper right thigh when he attempted to stop a fight in progress. His left eye was also injured during the incident.

The victims were transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center for treatment.

According to St. Thomas Police Chief Rodney F. Querrard Sr., more than 25 fights and other altercations occurred during the J’ouvert celebration but not all those involved were arrested.

Five people were also arrested Thursday on various assault charges.

Densil Williams, 21, of Hospital Ground and two female minors were arrested for allegedly assaulting another female. Williams had a steak knife on him when he was arrested around 10:30 a.m. and charged with aggravated assault and battery, according to police. The minors were arrested shortly before noon and charged with simple assault. Bail for Williams was set at $500, and the minors were released into their parent’s custody.

Henson Bedminster, 40, of Kronprindsens Gade was arrested at about 11 a.m. and charged with simple assault and destruction of property. Police said he assaulted a male victim and damaged the windshield of a car. Bail for Bedminster was set at $1,000, and he was taken into custody.

At about 8 p.m. Thursday, Adjanaye Carty, 20, of Puerto Rico, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault after police say she punched a person in the nose causing injuries. The incident happened on Commandant Gade. Her bail was set at $25,000, and she was remanded into police custody.

Wednesday about 8:30 p.m., 31-year-old Yanira Martinez of Gamble Gade was arrested and charged with simple assault and battery for assaulting a person at Market Square. Her bail was set at $500, and she was remanded into police custody.
